Box Office Weekend: Thor In Valhalla, Takes Box Office by Storm

Box office receipts have been tepid as of late, but Thor: The Dark World changed that for the better by absolutely trouncing the competition. While other films have been doing decent enough business, the latest Marvel blockbuster came into November with a hearty and decisive bang, picking up an estimated $86.1 million. The second highest earner, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, while a rousing success in its own right, only managed to make an estimated $11.3 million for its third week.

Thor: The Dark WorldThe third-, fourth-, and fifth-place finishers both struggle to make ends meet, but one is perhaps the most surprising. Free Birds managed an estimated $11.2 million, and Last Vegas an estimated $11.1 million, but neither film lost much from their somewhat dismal starts last weekend. Ender’s Game, however, dropped like a stone from its debut at the top of the list, netting only an estimated $10.3 million. With poor foreign box office, it may well be the first movie this year to find itself in a first-place spot in the box office and yet still turn out to be a financial bomb (and, in fact, has yet to make as much as a few of the year’s biggest underachievers).

Gravity continues on a nice, clean, easy descent through the list (unlike the events experienced in the film) with a weekend estimate of $8.4 million. 12 Years a Slave remained in seventh, but picked up more theaters and more revenue, scoring an estimated $6.6 million. It even beat back Captain Phillips, whose estimated $5.8 million does not bring it quite the grand haul its main contender Gravity has banked, but the biographical thriller has still done very well at the box office.

About Time pushed its way up the list as it entered wide release, the romantic comedy earning an estimated $5.1 million; granted, with no budget numbers its success is up in the air, but it is on par to fit right in with the earnings of director Richard Curtis’ earlier efforts (and has done very well overseas, with a worldwide total of $44.9 million). Finally, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is likely to drop off the list by next week, its estimated $2.8 million continuing to make it a financial success, despite failing to capture the same box office of the previous film.
