Box-Office Weekend: Venom Takes a Bite Out of the Box Office


Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was knocked from the top spot of the box-office weekend after holding the honor for four straight weeks, by newcomers Venom: Let There Be Carnage. and The Addams Family 2.

The Tom Hardy starring Venom: Let There Be Carnage took in $90.1 million in its first weekend of release, easily dominating the weekend box-office as second-place finisher (and second debut of the weekend) The Addams Family 2 finished with a very distant $18 million.

Meanwhile, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings dropped to third place in its fifth week of release adding only $6 million over the weekend to lift its total to $206.1 million. A third debut this weekend, the “Sopranos” prequel, The Many Saints of Newark made $5 million in its first weekend of release, which was good enough to land in fourth place. Dropping from the second to the fifth spot this weekend, was Dear Evan Hansen which added $2.5 million to give the dramatic musical a two-week tally of $11.8 million.

Falling three spots to sixth place in its eighth week of release was the action/adventure/comedy/sci-fi hybrid Free Guy, which added $2.3 million of the weekend to lift its grand total to $117.6 million. Also dropping a few spots this weekend, from fourth to seventh to be precise, was the horror film Candyman which now has a six-week total of $58.9 million after bringing in $1.2 million over the weekend. Dopping two spots from six to eight this weekend was Disney’s Jungle Cruise, which added $680,000 this weekend, giving it a ten-week total of $116.1 million.

Two new films to the weekend box office landed in the final two spots. The Indian comedy Chal Mera Putt 3 made $644,000 in its first weekend of release, finishing in ninth place, while the Christian music documentary The Jesus Music took the final spot in the top ten with $560,000 over the course of its first weekend in release. Consequently, five films dropped out of the weekend box office top ten this week, including: Cry Macho, Malignant, Copshop, PAW Patrol: The Movie, and Love Story.
